I
saw this wonderful ribbon bag on TV last week and I just had to share it with you. If I had just seen it, I would have thought it was way too involved to make. But the instructions were so simple.
You will need: grosgrain ribbon, fabric scissors, lining fabric, ruler, iron, pins, sewing machine, thread, masking tape. ( grosgrain ribbon is a very durable ribbon and will be the best choice for this bag.)
Pick the color you want your bag to be. This lovely red bag would look great for Valentine’s day. I would love to make one with black grosgrain ribbon for church. If you wanted to use green for St. Patrick’s Day it would be perfect.
Ribbon pieces will be 12 inches from sewn edge to sewn edge, add 18-24 inches long, cut diagonally, lay them out on top of fabric layered on top of each other, like siding beginning at the bottom, stack to the top.
You will need enough fabric to align with the height of the ribbon, then doubled plus 1 ½ inches at the top 20 inches of fabric, then doubled and allow enough at the bottom to crease and allow for the bottom of the bag. Leave 1 ½ inch seam allowance on each side.
Pin each ribbon as you go so you can turn inside out and sew. On last strip, make handle and sew the ends under the last ribbon, Do both sides of fabric with ribbon, then fold ribbon side inside, and sew up each side of the bag, 18th inch seam allowance
Now turn right side out and press the bag, use another fabric on top of the ribbon to prevent scorching ribbon.
To make the handle, measure 18 inches of ribbon, sew in half at the middle and pin to the inside of the bag, Pin last layer of ribbon and sew across the top and handles all at the same time.
Once all ribbon is sewn together and to the fabric, trim all edges, and make sure the ribbon tails are even and diagonally. You can sew in a zipper or a snap for closure.
You can make this cute glittery pin to put on the purse, I will post instructions in a later post.
