May Day (May 1st) is celebrated in many places around the world. The traditions and stories surrounding May Day vary from place to place. There is, however, one thing that is similar in most celebrations – the use of Flowers!
One of the most popularly known May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers and/or other small gifts on a neighbor’s doorknob. The trick is you don’t want the neighbor to see you! If you get caught, you are supposed to get a kiss.
Mayday cone
Instructions:
Cut a triangle shape out of bright colored construction paper. Make the point flat and the long edge rounded. Roll the triangle into a cone and glue or tape the 2 sides together. Cut a strip of decorative ribbon that is approximately 12 inches by 2 inches. Glue or tape it onto the top of your cone to make a handle. You can decorate the cone with stickers, ribbon, or what ever you have. Fill your cone basket with real or home-made flowers and try to hang it on your neighbor’s doorknob without getting caught! These homemade flowers can be made using craft sticks/chenille wire-pipe cleaners, construction paper/craft foam and candy as the centers, you could also use tissue paper flowers. We always used fresh flowers cut from our garden or the neighbors flower beds, wrapped the cut ends in wet paper towel, and then wrapped the ends with foil or saran wrap to keep the cone dry. The paper ones work well if you don’t have any blooming on May 1st.
