220px-EasterBonnetToday the Easter bonnet is a type of hat that women and girls wear to Easter services, and in the Easter parade following it. Ladies purchased new and elaborate designs for particular church services, and in the case of Easter, taking the opportunity of the end of Lent to buy luxury items. Now, in a more casual society, Easter Bonnets are becoming harder to find, as fewer and fewer women bother with the tradition.

Modern Easter bonnets for children are usually white wide-brimmed hats with a pastel colored satin ribbon around it and tied in a bow. It may also have flowers or other springtime motifs on top, and may match a special dress picked out for the occasion. wow hat

Until recently, it was popular in grade school to ask a child to design an Easter-themed hat at that time of year. The aim was to get their parents to wear it to Easter services.

EasterCROSSEaster is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days following his crucifixion and death on the day traditionally referred to as Good Friday. Easter Sunday falls on a different date in March or April each year, a date calculated based on the cycle of the moon. While Good Friday is a sad day, resurrection day, or Easter Sunday, is a bright day of celebration for Christians every spring.

While many people dress up for church on Sundays, Easter Sunday has always been a special time for dressing up and the perfect time for a new outfit, especially for women and children. In the past the new Easter outfit included, and even today sometimes still includes, a pretty new hat.

EASTERDRESSIn recent years most women no longer wear hats, but the tradition continues for young children, with little girls and sometimes even baby boys getting a new Easter bonnet every year.sharon3a

Pagan or secular customs have become a huge part of the Easter season, many being celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike. Some modern Easter customs include coloring Easter eggs, Easter egg hunts, a visit from the Easter bunny, and even crafting Easter bonnets from paper plates or simple straw hats and paper or plastic flowers and  decorative ribbons, always a fun and creative springtime project.Easter-Bonnets_full_article_vertical

Kids Easter Table Decoratinge1 001

Bring some fun to the kids’ table with zero-fuss decorations as irresistible as they are indestructible.  For centerpiece, fill white plastic egg cups with green jelly beans, and then add marshmallow chicks and mini daisies. This no-sew tablecloth is every easy to make.  Use a craft store grommet kit to punch to punch holes at the edges of kitchen towels.  Then join them all together with decorative ribbon bows.   I didn’t have the grommet kit so I simply made button holes in all the edges, then used ribbon to join all the towels.

Regal Rabbit

Elevate a white chocolate bunny, with a delicate sheer, decorative ribbon bow around his neck, to the top tier of this triple-decker display.  Remove labels from two unopened tin cans.  With a glue gun (or glue dots that can be removed later) attach cans to the centers of three round cake pans as shown.  Divide flats of wheatgrass (available at health food stores), and arrange inside pans with the grass poking out.  Add foil covered chocolate eggs to each pan.  Set atop a low cake stand, and let your bunny preside over the festivities.  I found this unique Easter centerpiece in a magazine.  I added my alternate suggestions for a less permanent display. I want to use my cake pans over .  You could use the three levels to display different children’s Easter candy or just put the extra candy in it for every one to share.

Get Carried Away with Spring

Brimming with vibrant tulips and intensely hued eggs, a rustic berry tray becomes a cheery centerpiece to brighten any tabletop.  Look for flat-bottom antique wooden carriers (called trugs) at flea markets, or artificially aged new one from a garden store using sandpaper.  Place tiny terra-cotta/clay pots inside the base in free-form rows filling the spaces in between with mounds of decorative moss.  In about half the containers, perch dyed hard-boiled eggs: in the other half, insert a dampened floral oasis (available at craft stores), I just used silk flowers stuck down in a small amount of clay or play-dough. I used tulip blossoms, hyacinths’, daffodils’ and more moss. I wrapped the top of the handle with grosgrain, decorative ribbon adding a tiny ribbon bow to each corner.  I also added a contrasting pastel sheer ribbon around the base making the ends meet with no bow.

Spring into spring!

I love decorating for spring.  It’s been a long cold winter and its time to celebrate the new birth of life outside.  I love this idea of using antique with fresh and new.  The rustic wood window frame is being used as a shadow box shelf with this lovely spring daisy and straw flower wreath.  You can use a Styrofoam ring to keep the weight down.  Use lots of tiny silk and straw flowers to build this wreath.  Hang with a decoravie ribbon. Fresh flowers can be used, to make your own garden-fresh wreath: Dip foam in water until it’s damp but not dripping, then stand it upright in a sink for one hour to drain.  Trim each flower stem to one to two inches, and insert into foam.  Pack flowers tightly overlapping them so no foam is visible; add a wreath hook, either store-bought or fashioned from a wire.  Wrap with ribbon, and finish with a dapper neck tie knot.

Just the Write Gift

Cover pencils in pretty paper for a custom look.  Cut paper to measure the length of the pencil and about an inch wide.  Smear the back of each strip with glue stick, wrap paper around pencil, smooth wrinkles, and bundle all up with a decorative ribbon bow!

This would be a sweet addition to an Easter basket.  You could give these as gifts at a school party or as birthday party favors wrapped in matching paper for the theme.  This would make a lovely gift added to some stationary or desk supplies for a teacher since she is always in need of extra pencils. You could use scrap Christmas paper and stuff into the stockings.

Easter Grass or Pastel Shredsz1

This adorable Easter basket is just loaded with home died eggs.  I love the idea of using decorative shreds instead of plastic Easter grass.  A festive, decorative ribbon bow would make this simple basket more decorative!  Adding grass or decorative shreds to any basket will help protect the eggs.

How to use Ribbon while Scrapbooking

 z11

Ribbon is a wonderful accent to any scrapbook.  This uniquely creative way of scrapbooking by using little pouches for treasures utilizes decorative ribbon on the outside and inside.  The ribbon can be the actual ribbon from a childhood dress or even a matching ribbon from a wedding dress or hair bow personalizes your scrapbook. The antique ribbon adds to the value.  Have fun!
