Miniature Roses as House Plants

Roses are always a welcomed gift for Mothers Day.  Most stores will carry potted mini roses that will bloom for a long time with proper care.  Pick up a wicker basket a bit larger than the potted plant, put a plastic liner in the bottom and don’t forget a beautiful grosgrain ribbon bow. I like that it is a perfect color match to the rose color.

Although mini roses do quite well in containers and you often see them sold as houseplants, many gardeners are disappointed by their performance indoors. As roses, they need full sun and good humidity. These are easy enough to provide in summer, but humidity drops considerably when the heat comes on indoors and roses will quickly become desiccated. Mini roses given as gifts will do best if transplanted outdoors.

Mothers day card

Author: Flower Lady
April 19, 2010

I love it when my girls make me special cards rather than spending the 5 bucks on store bought greeting cards.  I thought this one was really sweet.  hint hint girls!  ;)

Materials and Tools:

card stock, floral patterned paper, scraps of decorative satin, or grosgrain  ribbon (assorted colors and width), white glue, glue dots, glue stick or adhesive of choice, scissors, pinking shears, deckle-edge scissors, lime green felt , gold beaded trim, rickrack trim, pink paper for heart, pen, small silk blossoms

Steps:

1.   Cover card stock with floral-print paper and fold into greeting card. Give one edge a scalloped effect with deckle-edge scissors.

2.   Cut ribbon and rickrack, trim into three to five pieces of varied lengths, each piece of ribbon will represent a layer on the cake. Cut felt with scissors and pinking shears (for the jagged edges) to create the cake plate and foot of the stand.

3.   Glue cake plate and stand onto front of card and add beaded trim to create the stem of the cake stand.

4.   Create the ribbon cake by gluing rows of ribbon and rickrack, largest to smallest, to the card. Embellish cake with small silk blossoms.

5.   Cut a small heart out of pink paper and write a thoughtful message to Mom on it. Glue heart to the top of the cake.

Mothers Day Flower Favorites 1

I absolutely love Calla Lilies’!

They are a high end flower and will cost a bit more but they have the “WOW” factor.  You can find them at most flower shops and some discount stores. Mom will love this potted plant for Mothers Day or May Day, don’t forget to accessorize this plant by adding a decorative satin ribbon bow. This is a gift that keeps on giving.  Unlike fresh-cut flowers that die in a few days, you can plant them out side and be blessed every year as they come up.

Although all callas are accented by rich green, long, sword- or arrow-shape leaves, many feature speckles or blotches of silver, white or cream, particularly the dwarf varieties.
The largest callas grow as tall as 7-8 feet, while dwarf specimens may be only 18 inches. No matter the size of the callas, all produce stunning, fleshy, waxy, long-lasting blooms, whether cut or allowed to remain on the plant to dramatize a garden setting.

Warning, they are poisonous to people and animals so be sure to keep an eye out for someone that may be tempted to eat them.

These bright frilly bows are so easy to create.  Just make a bouquet of curling ribbon and start curling, the more the better!  Whether it’s Mothers Day or a birthday, your decorative wrapping will bring a smile to the receiver of the gift before they open the gift.  When you take the time to make the out side of the gift look beautiful, it shows how much you really care.  Take time to pick out the decorative curling ribbon you need to make your package just “explode” with excitement.

Awareness Ribbons to help you remember…

Recently I was asked if I would wear a royal blue satin awareness ribbon for a few days to remind my self to pray for the son of a friend.  I said sure, I was already praying for him but this was another way to show support for her son and it actually did remind me to pray more often.

Her son enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was going through a tremendously difficult time of testing every limit of his physical, mental, and emotional strength for many hours.

I was surprised at how wearing a simple narrow blue ribbon pinned on with a tiny gold safety pin would initiate so many conversations which in turn, provoked others to pray for him as well.

The only times I had ever worn a ribbon for a cause was when large groups were also wearing them and the cause was obvious.

So I thoroughly understand how powerful an Awareness Ribbon can be in raising awareness for your cause.  People will approach you and say, “hey what’s the ribbon for” then they are compelled and obligated to listen to your story.  I was honored to be asked.

Prom Etiquette

Author: Flower Lady
April 14, 2010

p1aIn the United States and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal (black tie) dance, or gathering of high school students. It is typically held at the end of junior and/or senior year. It figures greatly in popular culture and is a major event among high school students.

Prom attire

Boys usually dress in black tie, regardless of the time of the event, sometimes paired with brightly colored ties.

Girls wear traditional dresses. They may purchase their prom dresses from specialized shops, boutiques, or Internet retailers. There are many specialty labels selling prom dresses that release new collections each prom season.

Traditionally girls will also wear a corsage with coordinating decorative ribbon, given to them by their dates, and girls give boys matching boutonnières to be worn on their lapel. In some situations, the girl prefers to carry the flowers.  Be sure to ask what style she thinks will best match her dress style.corsage3

fullawareness

Decorative Ribbons have been used to express solidarity on the part of the wearer with the identified cause since the early to late 20th Century. Pink Ribbons (and the color pink) are used to express support for women (and men) who are diagnosed with Breast Cancer. In the fall of 1991, the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest grassroots movement of breast cancer survivors, is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and started the races to raise money to find a cure. Since the 1980′s, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series® has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a national series of more than 100 races with some 1.5 million people involved.

komenThe Indianapolis race is among the biggest Komen races in the country.

It began as a promise between two sisters to end breast cancer and it has grown into a global movement.  The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Indianapolis, one of the biggest races in the nation to end breast cancer, is set for Saturday morning, April 17, 2010 on the campus of IUPUI and Military Park in downtown Indianapolis.  WTHR is once again a proud sponsor of the 5K run/walk and 1-mile family walk.

The entry fee for the Race for the Cure is $28 for individual or team participants and $25 for breast cancer survivors. The deadline to register online is April 9th, but you can also register the morning of the event for an additional late fee of $10.  Click here to register.

Channel 13 Eyewitness News Anchors Andrea Morehead and John Stehr will again serve as the emcees of this year’s Race for the Cure Opening Ceremonies.  Last year’s attendance of more than 42,000 raised $2.2 million for breast cancer research, treatment and education.

You are invited to walk with the Channel 13 team at the Race.

Flowers and Ribbon

sympathy_wreathFlowers and decorative  ribbon go together like peanut butter and jelly. Whether it’s a happy occasion or difficult time, Flowers can say the words you struggle to speak. This beautiful wreath uses two shades of purple printed ribbon and huge pompom bows on each side to express your sympathy.  The deep purple is a wonderful contrast to the brilliant yellow sunflowers. This would easily brighten any room during a very difficult time.  The wreath could be made with fresh or silk flowers.  If you chose silk flowers, the wreath would be a cherished memento of the day and designated for a loved one to hang in their home.  Of course the ribbon can be easily removed for home display.  The fresh wreaths are generally taken to decorate at the cemetery.
